Details | John Elway's Crown Toyota in Ontario, CA

The Toyota Camry was at the top of the American-Made Index, compiled by, for the second year in a row in 2016. The best-selling sedan is assembled in Kentucky, and it is made with at least 75 percent domestically-sourced parts.

But not only are new Toyota vehicles manufactured in America -- many are designed here, too.

Calty Design Research, Inc. is a contracted portmanteau of "California" and "Toyota." It was first opened in 1973 in El Segundo as a beachhead into North American design by the Japanese auto company. In 1987, Calty rose to prominence for designing the Celica Liftback, which became the Motor Trend Import Car of the Year.

Today, there are three Calty locations:

  • Newport Beach
  • San Francisco
  • Ann Arbor

Together, these design studios have created bold concept cars, like the 2003 FJ Cruiser concept which shaped the design of the 2006 FJ Cruiser, practical production cars like the Toyota Tundra, and have integrated new technologies by working with Silicon Valley innovators.
