STEM Students Driven To Learn At Math, Science Day

Pretty easy to draw conclusions about how much fun it would be to be a middle school student and attend a day at the Auto Club Speedway prior to a National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing event.

For Megan Claire of Lakeview Middle School in Victorville, you could say she literally had the March 23 Math and Science Day at the speedway down to an art. That's because she was the winner of the student artwork contest and was recognized among about 600 of her peers at the middle school event.

Claire, who attends Lakeview in the Victor Valley Union High School District, was among students from 20 schools in San Bernardino and Riverside counties to attend the third annual event.

In addition to applying principles they learned in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) classes at the race track, the students were able to hear from NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace, as well as Steve Boyer, the director of engineering for Michael Waltrip Racing.

Rutledge Wood from "Speed TV" and "Top Gear" cable shows also addressed the students. County Superintendent Gary Thomas welcomed the students to the day-long event and introduced special guest James Ramos, chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

The following schools and their districts from San Bernardino County attending the March 23 event were: Vanguard Prep from Apple Valley Unified; Cedar and Ranchero middle schools from Hesperia Unified; Oaks, Vina Danks, Vineyard and Wiltsey middle schools in Ontario-Montclair; Upland Junior High in Upland Unified; Cobalt, Lakeview and University Prep in Victor Valley Union High School District; and Competitive Edge Charter, Inland Leaders Charter and Mesa View and Park View middle schools in Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified.

The event was sponsored by the Auto Club Speedway, the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools' Alliance for Education (with funding from a grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians), Toyota Financial Services, John Elway's Crown Toyota and Toyota Motor Sales.spacer
